Case Study: Shire Christian School
Project Background
An architecture firm set out to revamp Shire Christian School but encountered a potential risk—a Sydney Water easement buried 2-4 metres deep beneath the sports field. This posed a serious threat of delays and additional costs.
The Challenge
- Operating in a busy school environment with students and staff.
- The risk of hitting a 3m-deep water main hidden under layers of fill.
- The need to comply with safety standards and AS 5488
Geoscope’s Four-Phase Solution
Phase 1. Desktop Investigation
We reviewed Before You Dig plans, historical site plans, and aerial images to identify potential hazards.
Phase 2. Quality Level-B Locating
Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Locating, we mapped the underground utilities with precision.
Phase 3. Non-Destructive Digging (QL-A)
Our vacuum excavation method safely exposed the pipe without damage, ensuring an exact measurement of its depth.
Phase 4. Data Processing & Reporting
All measurements and scans were compiled into a detailed Subsurface Utility Report that meets AS 5488 standards, giving the architects confidence to design safely around the utility.

The project at Shire Christian School proceeded without delays or disruptions. The hidden water main was successfully mapped, and our client praised our thoroughness and friendly service:
