Why Pipe Locating Is Essential Before You Dig

Utility Survey by Geoscope

Any excavation or ground-penetrating work carries the risk of striking underground utility pipes. Damaging water, gas, sewer, or stormwater pipes can result in serious safety hazards, major project delays, and expensive repairs.

Modern underground infrastructure is complex. Pipes are constructed from a wide range of materials and often run alongside electrical and communications services. The days of relying on basic metal detection or assumptions are long gone.

Professional pipe locating ensures underground services are identified and verified before excavation begins, allowing work to proceed safely and confidently.

How Pipe Locating Works

1

Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) Review

Before attending site, DBYD plans are obtained and reviewed. DBYD is a free national service that provides indicative underground utility plans from asset owners, typically within 48 hours.

While DBYD plans are an essential first step, they are not guaranteed to be accurate and must be verified on site.

2

On-Site Pipe Detection

Our technicians use a combination of EM locating and GPR to trace underground pipes. This allows us to identify pipe alignment, depth, and potential conflicts with other services.

3

Marking & Verification

Located pipes are clearly marked on the surface. Where required, we provide guidance on safe potholing or non-destructive digging to visually confirm critical services.

GPR Equipment and Electromagnetic EM Equipment tools by Geoscope Locating

Pipe Locating Technology We Use

Electromagnetic (EM) Locating

EM locating is used for conductive pipes such as copper or steel. A transmitter applies a traceable signal to the pipe, allowing the receiver to accurately trace its path and estimate depth.

Different frequencies are used depending on pipe type and site conditions to minimise interference and improve accuracy.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

GPR is ideal for locating non-conductive pipes such as PVC, plastic, or concrete. It detects subsurface anomalies without requiring direct access to the pipe and can also identify other underground features such as rock, concrete, or voids.

Using EM and GPR together allows us to accurately locate the vast majority of underground pipes.

Managing Excavation Risk & Duty of Care

Accidentally striking an underground pipe can cause serious injury, service disruption, environmental damage, or significant financial loss. Excavation permits and Codes of Practice increasingly require confirmation of actual underground service locations — not just DBYD plans.

By locating and verifying pipes before excavation, you:

1

Protect workers and the public

2

Reduce the risk of delays and shutdowns

3

Meet your legal duty of care

4

Gain confidence to proceed safely
