Common Questions

What kind of pipes can you locate?

Water, sewer, stormwater, gas and drainage lines, in metal, copper, blue brute, poly and plastic. The method changes with the material, which is why we carry both electromagnetic and GPR equipment on every job.

Are there any pipes you can't locate?

Some are genuinely difficult. If a pipe or cable is inaccessible and direct connection clips or induction clamps can’t be applied, a general induction sweep may be less accurate for anything deeper than about a metre. Non-conductive pipe and some sewer pipes can’t carry a signal at all, which is where GPR or a detectable duct rod comes in.

Do I still need Dial Before You Dig?

Yes. DBYD is a free national service and an essential first step — it tells you what the asset owners have on record. But plans are an indication, not a physical confirmation. It’s your responsibility to check their accuracy using appropriate locating methods.

Is pipe locating only necessary for excavation work?

No. Any work that penetrates the subsurface can cause a strike, including boring, Horizontal Directional Drilling, and saw cutting. Boring in particular can cause a strike where existing services run parallel to or cross the bore path.

Can you locate pipes on residential property?

Yes. Underground utilities like Telstra main cables are highly likely to be located inside the fence lines of rural properties, and sewer mains that service many properties can be found in the front or backyard of a property. Even high voltage cables can occasionally be found within a property boundary fence line.

Can you locate plastic pipes?

Yes. Non-conductive pipes like PVC and poly carry no electromagnetic signal, so we use ground penetrating radar for those. Where a plastic pipe has a tracer wire installed, we can also trace that directly.

How deep can you locate a pipe?

Depth accuracy for line tracing is approximately ±2.5% tolerance from 0.1m to 3m, and for a sonde from 0.1m to 7m. Under AS 5488 Quality Level B, electromagnetic tracing is classified as ±500mm depth and ±300mm position.

What's the benefit of getting a permit to excavate?

At best, accidentally striking an underground pipe will delay your project. At worst it will cost millions in damages and could be dangerous or even fatal for site workers. Obtaining a permit means all excavation works are conducted according to the Code of Practice.

How accurate is the marking on site?

We mark position on the surface with colour-coded spray paint, chalk, crayon, masking tape or permanent marker depending on the surface type, and record the same information in your report. For permanent or semi-permanent markings, tell us at booking.

How quickly can you get on site?

Same-day and next-day bookings are available across Sydney metro. We recommend 3–5 days’ notice prior to excavation where possible.
