What Does a utility locator do?

Utility locators help project teams find and understand underground services before work begins. 

This role involves:

Electromagnetic locating

Ground penetrating radar

Utility investigations

NDD investigations

Utility mapping

Client communication

Trainee

Learn the fundamentals of utility locating, safety procedures, equipment operation, and field best practices under supervision.

Junior Locator

Perform basic utility locating tasks independently while continuing to develop technical skills and field experience.

Geoscope Certified

Achieve certification in Geoscope technology, demonstrating competency in advanced locating techniques and equipment usage.

Certloc Certified

Earn industry-recognized Certloc certification, validating professional knowledge, accuracy, and compliance with industry standards.

Senior Locator

Handle complex locating projects, mentor junior team members, and provide technical expertise in challenging field situations.

Lead Technician

Oversee field operations, coordinate teams, ensure quality standards are met, and support project delivery and client satisfaction.

Leadership

Develop people-management skills, coach and support teams, drive performance, and contribute to company growth and culture.

Management

Lead departments or business operations, oversee strategic planning, resource allocation, team development, and organizational success.
